Potential contracts with Arista and Geffen never materialized, as well as the prospect of hiring David Bowie as producer. Originally billed as The Jimmy Norton Explosion, the soon to be re-christened Spectres also recorded a Peel session and opened for the Ramones in London in 1980. Background info on them isn’t terribly robust (with the exception of this highly informative essay ), but the vitals are that Matlock, along with four other blokes, including Budgie (of Siouxsie fame), Steve New (a holdover from Rich Kids) and Danny Kustow of the Tom Robinson band, met up in 1979, and recorded all of two singles. Turns out when I was doing some fact checking on the Rich Kids, it came to my attention there was yet another outfit from a similar period that Matlock was not only involved with, but apparently fronted as well – The Spectres. Rich Kids of course were a British post-punk quartet who’s lineup featuring Midge Ure (pre-Ultravox) and Glen Matlock (former Sex Pistol) seemed to be more heralded than the music contained on their lone LP, Ghosts of Princes in Towers. Paying tribute to Shelley, The Buzzcock’s said: “Pete’s music has inspired generations of musicians over a career that spanned five decades and with his band and as a solo artist, he was held in the highest regard by the music industry and by his fans around the world.Earlier this year, some of you may recall my share of the Rich Kids Burning Sounds CD of demos and outtakes. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I am totally shocked and saddened to just hear of the untimely death of Pete Shelley.Ī superb songwriter, artist and a totally sweet hearted guy who was one of the very few originals of punk and even a one off within that. "But after all life's only death's recompense." RIP ♥️♥️ /vAAg7Jui52

And Pete Shelley was an amazing songwriter. Tributes have poured in for the late singer, among them ex- Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock, author Neil Gaiman and Tracy Thorn. The influential rock band rose to fame with their 1978 hit, ‘Ever Fallen in Love With’. McNeish wrote: “This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, is tell you my brother Pete Shelley had a heart attack this morning and passed away.” The news was announced publicly via Facebook by Gary McNeish, the lead singer’s brother. The group’s management told the BBC that Shelley died yesterday (6th December) of a suspected heart attack, in his home in Estonia. Buzzcocks lead singer Pete Shelley has passed away at the age of 63. Glen Matlock was born in England on August 27, 1956.Bassist for the punk band The Pistols, with whom he originally worked from 1975 until 1977 and sporadically thereafter.
